Steganographic code was used by the British during the Second Word War. It was used to hide useful military intelligence in plain sight in letters to their families. The code was devised by MI9 and MI6 to bury the raw words of one message inside another. Its actually a lot harder than it sounds, and, outside a prison camp at least, it was fun to give it a try.
