The Jamaica Observer published an article on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, about Cyber Security and GPDR.
Caribbean countries are tasked with the mandate to strengthen their cyber security, along with proper acknowledgement of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) legislation.
- On May 25, 2018, the Caribbean Israel Centre for Cyber Defense (CICCD) mentioned in a news conference that personnel data is now classified as an ‘asset’.
- An entity, government, or private is responsible for any data that is captured according to the GDPR legislation. They are expected to have proper data privacy mechanisms in place.
- The entity will be held accountable for any data loss and will be fined. Also, the entity is expected to report the data breach within 72 hours.
- It is imperative for companies and agencies in the Caribbean who conduct business with European countries are encouraged to have compliance, such as training of their staff.
- Cybersecurity should not be left alone to the IT Department to take action. Everyone is exposed and can play a part in Cybersecurity for the organization they are in and also for themselves. Most attacks happen due to the weakest link in the chain, and it may be that the weakest link is humans.
- Offshore companies, in particular, are encouraged to implement GDPR policies within their cybersecurity framework because they are more likely to be impacted negatively without these mechanisms.
