All-in-one printers can be used to control infected air-gapped systems from far away

Israel researchers have found that an all-in-one printer can be used to attack air-gapped computers. Malware can be programmed to send commands to a malicious program running on such a computer by flashing visible or infrared light at the scanner lid when open. Researchers also found a way for the malware to send data back to the attackers by using the light produced by the scanner itself. The technique is similar to the so-called side-channel attacks that can also be used by analyzing a computer system’s power consumption or even a cryptographic operation.”]
