A Strong Message on Improper PHI Disclosure to News Media

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights says it has signed a $125,000 settlement with Allergy Associates of Hartford, Connecticut. The settlement comes in the wake of a February 2015 incident in which a patient contacted a local television station to speak about a dispute that occurred between the individual and one of the practice’s doctors. The doctor impermissibly disclosed the patient’s protected health information to the reporter, OCR notes. OCR’s investigation found that the doctor’s discussion with the reporter demonstrated a “reckless disregard for patient’s privacy rights””]
