Dutch university paid $220,000 ransom to hackers after Christmas attack

Maastricht University has admitted paying a ransom to hackers who compromised its network in the run-up to Christmas 2019. Staff at the Dutch university were called in to help after the attack. The decision to pay the ransom was made by the university’s Executive Board. The university says it suffered ‘little damage or irreparable damage’ from the attack, but that the decision was made to pay for the return of 19,000 students on 6 January. The attack took place on December 23, 2019, as the Clop ransomware was deployed.”]
