Engineers are dismantling San Franciscos E3 pier, one of the largest remaining chunks of the Bay Bridge. The explosion will take place tomorrow morning at 6:45 am PT in San Francisco. A fleet of barges outfitted with air compressors will create a bubble curtain to disperse the underwater shockwave. The blast will still kill 1,775 endangered longfin smelt, but engineers say it is a better solution than slowly dismantling the pier by hand. Scientists will be on the lookout in particular for two diving birds, the endangered least tern and the protected brown pelican.”]
