The IRS says that the number of people whose tax returns were targeted are in the thousands, not the hundreds of thousands. As many as 320,000 people now have their personal details, like social security numbers, date of birth, and addresses, out on the open market where it will be bartered and sold. Eventually someone could gather enough details to apply for credit cards or buy used Jet Skis on eBay or whatever they want to do with someone else’s money.
