Hacker Barnaby Jack bought some used used ATMs on eBay and made it spit out passwords and money. Researchers discovered over 1,000 entities online, including Google and the DHS, who own what are called “subordinate CAs,” special certificates that allow them to hand out other certificates to anybody they want.
