A $60 Hack Can Fool the LIDAR Sensors Used on Most Self-Driving Cars

A researcher has developed a system to send spurious signals to LIDAR sensors used in self-driving cars. Jonathan Petit, from Security Innovation, developed the system using a low-power laser and a pulse generator powered by a Raspberry Pi or Arduino. The hardware can be used to capture the light reflections from an obstacle and send them toward the sensors that sit on top of autonomous vehicles. Petit claims that manufacturers of such sensors havent thought enough about the possibility of such attacks. In theory it should be possible to encrypt or encode the signals to overcome such a problem.”]
