Sneaky Web Tracking Technique Under Heavy Scrutiny by GDPR

Don t expect tracking methods such as browser fingerprinting to disappear anytime soon, warns the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Privacy experts say the practice is likely illegal under the newly-enacted General Data Protection Regulation. Sites using fingerprinting would have to first reveal the fingerprinting before it is executed and wait for users to give their informed consent, the EFF said in its post. The EU is expected to pass an updated updated ePrivacy Regulation in 2019, but there is no evidence that this method of tracking users can escape the consequences of the new rules.
