ATM Skimming: Protect Your Card

TL;DR

ATM skimming steals your card details using hidden devices. Regularly check ATMs for tampering, cover the keypad when entering your PIN, and monitor your bank account closely. Report anything suspicious to your bank immediately.

What is ATM Skimming?

ATM skimming involves criminals attaching devices to ATMs to steal your card information (magnetic stripe data) and PIN. They then use this information to create fake cards and withdraw money from your account.

How to Protect Yourself: A Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Inspect the ATM Before Use
    • Look for anything unusual: Check around the card slot, keypad, and camera area. Skimmers are often added on top of existing parts.
    • Wiggle things: Gently try to move or pull at the card reader insert, the bezel around it, and the keypad. A loose part could indicate a skimmer.
    • Check for extra layers: Look for anything that doesn’t match the ATM’s usual design – different colours, materials, or thicknesses.
    • Camera check: Be aware of hidden cameras. They can be disguised as parts of the ATM (like a receipt dispenser slot) or nearby objects.
  2. Cover Your PIN Entry
    • Use your hand: Shield the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN, even if the ATM looks safe. This prevents hidden cameras from recording it.
    • Be aware of surroundings: Watch for anyone standing too close or acting suspiciously.
  3. Use ATMs at Reputable Locations
    • Bank branches: Prefer ATMs inside bank branches, as they are generally more secure.
    • Well-lit and busy areas: Choose ATMs in well-lit, public locations with security cameras and foot traffic.
    • Avoid standalone ATMs: Be cautious of ATMs in isolated or poorly lit areas.
  4. Monitor Your Bank Account Regularly
    • Check transactions frequently: Review your bank statement and online transaction history daily or at least a few times a week for any unauthorized activity.
    • Set up alerts: Enable text or email alerts for all transactions, especially withdrawals over a certain amount. Most banks offer this service.
  5. Report Suspicious Activity Immediately
    • Contact your bank: If you notice any unauthorized transactions or suspect your card has been compromised, contact your bank immediately.
    • Cancel your card: Request a new card with a different number to prevent further fraudulent activity.
    • File a police report: Reporting the incident to the police can help with investigations and potential recovery of funds.

What if I suspect an ATM is compromised?

Do not use the ATM. Immediately notify the bank that owns the ATM (the logo will be displayed on the machine). If possible, take a photo of the suspicious device and report it to the police.

Technical Details for Advanced Users (Optional)

Skimmers often use components like:

  • Magnetic stripe readers: These read your card data as you insert it.
  • Keypad overlays: Fake keypads that record your PIN when pressed.
  • Hidden cameras: Capture your PIN entry.
  • Bluetooth/WiFi transmitters: Send stolen data to the criminals remotely.

While you can’t easily detect these without dismantling the ATM, being vigilant about physical inspection is crucial.
