US universities targeted with malware used by state-backed actors

Faculty and students at several U.S. colleges and universities were targeted in phishing attacks with a remote access Trojan (RAT) previously used by Chinese state-sponsored threat actors. The Hupigon RAT was first spotted by FireEye in 2010 while using a zero-day vulnerability affecting versions 6, 7, and 8 of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer to infect victims. The operators behind these attacks use adult dating lures asking the potential victims to choose one of two dating profiles to connect with.
