U.S. Charges WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange With Violating Espionage Act

The U.S. Justice Department charges Assange with 17 new counts against WikiLeaks founder. Assange could face 175 years in prison if convicted for all counts. WikiLeaks calls the prosecution “madness” and “the end of national security journalism and the First Amendment,” which guarantees free speech. This is the first time the 102-year-old, First World War-era Espionage Act has been used against a journalist. Assange was arrested last month in London after Ecuador withdrew his asylum and sentenced to 50 weeks in U.K. prison.
