Cisco’s Talos cyber intelligence uncovers more details about VPNFilter botnet malware. VPNFilter malware infected more than 500,000 routers in at least 54 countries, allowing attackers to spy on users and conduct destructive cyber operations. New devices from new vendors were also discovered from Linksys, MikroTik, Netgear, and TP-Lin. The malware triggers a killswitch for routers, where it first deliberately kills itself, before deleting the rest of the files on the system. For some devices, resetting the factory could remove the destructive malware.
