The explosion in the use of technology to expand one’s online presence opens the door for new issues and challenges for businesses in the area of data privacy and data protection. Data controllers in Jamaica have a duty, pursuant to the Data Protection Act, to comply with this principle. It requires a data controller to limit the collection of personal data to what is relevant and necessary for the purpose it is being processed and retained for only as long as is necessary to achieve that purpose. Taking the’save everything’ approach is not best practice, says Joanna Marzouca.
