SmileDirectClub: Attack Taking Big Bite Out of Revenue

Nashville-based SmileDirectClub says it experienced a systems outage caused by a cybersecurity incident on April 14. The company says it was “able to successfully block the attack” and that it paid no ransom. Despite insurance coverage, the incident may have a “material impact” on the company’s overall financial results for the second quarter. The financial impact of a cyber incident is frequently underestimated, says former healthcare CIO David Finn, who says it’s hard to estimate. For healthcare entities, cyber incidents typically lead to a 6% reduction in revenue from lost revenue, Finn says.”]
