Fewer Breaches in 2018, But More Sensitive Data Spilled

The Identity Theft Resource Center counted 1,244 U.S. breaches in 2018, down 23 percent from 2017. The organization that reported the most number of exposed records was Marriott International. The business sector led by a clear margin, followed by healthcare, financial services, government/military and education, the report says. The report is only based on what organizations have disclosed, but the actual number of breached records likely exceeds the reported number substantially, the ITRC says. Unauthorized data breaches were the top three causes of data compromises in 2018: 482 million data breaches, 404 million records exposed, exposing 16 million consumer records.”]
