EHR Vendor Mistake Impacts 150,000 U.K. Patients

A coding error by an electronic health records vendor has resulted in a data breach impacting 150,000 patients in the United Kingdom. The incident also serves as a reminder to all healthcare entities in the U.S. and elsewhere about the risks vendors pose to the security and privacy of patient data. In some cases, protected health information was left exposed on the internet by vendors because of coding mistakes, as well as cyberattacks. In April, Kansas-based medical transcription services vendor MEDantex inadvertently exposed “a few hundred patient records” of 2,300 physician practice clients because of an unsecured web portal.”]
