Domain ‘Typosquatting’ Hits 2020 US Elections

At least 550 fake domains targeting Democratic and Republican U.S. Presidential candidates and election-related funding sites have been uncovered by cybersecurity vendor Digital Shadows. Such so-called “typosquatting” efforts are designed to take advantage of errors by users who accidentally mistype the URL of a candidate website and get sent to another site. 68 percent of the typosquatted sites redirect the user to a different site, at times including the site of a political rival. Some redirects are more dangerous, sending users to “file converter” or “secure browsing” Google extensions.”]
