Australia mulls data breach notification law, but details are secret

Australia does not have a data breach notification law. Instead, the federal government recommends that organizations notify the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. The draft bill hasn’t been publicly released, but some organizations and companies have publicly published their responses to the draft bill. The bill could become law before a federal election in September, a spokesman for the attorney general said. The Australian Privacy Foundation says the bill needs to be stronger and needs some tightening to get it to pass in confidence. The APF says determining when an organization should report a breach is too high.”]
