US police increasingly peeping at email, instant messages

There’s no U.S. federal law that requires reporting of requests for stored communications data, researcher says. Christopher Soghoian says police are “enthusiastically embraced” asking for e-mail, instant messages and location data. He says the real total number of requests is likely much, much higher. Congress should have oversight of these new surveillance powers, he says, and companies are reluctant to voluntarily release the data, he writes. He recommends mandating that the Administrative Office of the US. Courts compile statistics on requests.”]
