Wal-Mart plans to convert all U.S. payment terminals to smartcard-compatible card technology. Other initiatives are under way or have been undertaken to test ways of making magnetic stripe card transactions more secure. Technology uses information from the magnetic stripe on the back of each card to create a unique digital fingerprint of the card. Technology is designed to detect and stop use of counterfeit cards based on stolen payment card data at the payment terminal itself. The United Nations Federal Credit Union announced this week that it will soon be issuing smart credit cards.”]
