New York hospitals to use smart card technology to integrate patient data with essential health information. Smart cards will allow Mount Sinai to incorporate up to 27 pages of medical history on each card, including data on chronic diseases, current medications and possibly even compressed EKG files. Smart card vendor Siemens is kicking in US$2 million to support the project. Eventually, 45 affiliated and related health care facilities in the area will be linked by the smart card initiative. All sensitive information on the cards is encrypted for privacy reasons and can be accessed only after the patient enters a private personal identification number.”]
