Long-Awaited HHS Data Sharing Rules Raise Privacy Worries

EHR vendor Epic Systems Corp. raises concerns about privacy of patient data accessed and shared using apps and mobile consumer apps. The Department of Health and Human Service’s proposed rules on interoperability and information blocking prevention are expected to be issued soon. The rules are aimed at providing patients with the ability to securely access and share their health data using smartphones and other consumer devices. Epic has called for changes in the rules to prevent serious risks to patient privacy. Some skeptics suspect some of the concerns expressed by Epic could be driven, in part, by competitive fears involving providing consumer app vendors access to patient health records.”]
