Breach Settlement Has Unusual Penalty

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal’s office has signed a $200,000 settlement with a medical practice’s business associate for a 2016 breach. The firm’s owner, Tushar Mathur, has been banned from managing or owning a business in New Jersey. The settlement resolves allegations that Best Medical Transcription violated federal HIPAA regulations and the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act in connection with a breach impacting 1,654 patients of Virtua Medical Group. This is the first time a state attorney general has banned a business owner from managing a state business as a result of a breach settlement.”]
